About Norwood Design & Development

Learn more about me and what I do.

I provide software development services for small businesses, including other software companies.

I believe that the purpose of software is to deliver business value. Analysis- and business-led, I work back from business outcomes to technical decisions, and I have spent most of my career being the person clients trust to make those decisions. Most recently, I have been using an AI-assisted, specification-based workflow to deliver production work, while ensuring I maintain hands-on review and architectural oversight.

My background is in software design and architecture; I have a fundamental understanding of OOP, SOLID, and Design Patterns based on years of experience as well as formal education. Just as importantly, I know when not to apply them; an appropriate solution for a large system with thousands of concurrent users is unlikely to look the same as one for a single-user application for a small business.

If you're looking for a technical resource, read on; if you're looking for a freelancer to build you an application, you can learn more about how I work here.

If you're more interested in my technical credentials, you can find information about my software development skills here.

The system Chris built for us has replaced manually generated reports that often had to be updated before going out to clients and took hours with smart PDF reports that are generated in seconds and free from manual checking.

Tide CRM

An example of an application built using Blazor and the Developer Express eXpress Application Framework (XAF).

This is a framework that allows rapid development of line-of-business applications, designed to provide both flexibility and productivity.

This is a good fit for many small business applications, since it allows developers to customise the data model and business logic, while the UI is generated automatically at compile time.

Umbraco Sites

Umbraco is a fully open-source Content Management System (CMS) built on Microsoft's .NET platform. For the last 8 years, I have assisted Umbraco partners with creating, maintaining, and migrating websites either into Umbraco or up to the latest version.

Since I typically work with third-party clients under an NDA on these sites, I unfortunately can't link the Umbraco sites I've worked on, but they are typically large public-sector sites (so the WCAG 2.1 AA standard was a legal obligation, not just a "nice to have") and I migrated one of the largest sites in the EU from a completely undocumented, custom CMS into Umbraco.

A note here - I am not a web designer, and I generally believe that humans should be involved in design, so I don't use AI for this. I can work to a design; I can't build one for you (unless you want a software developer's idea of what a website should look like).
